Dooce has a quickie “tutorial” for how she created her semi-random looking masthead for this month. This tutorial adapts pretty easily for creating your own paper or header backgrounds, digitally. Basically, find a photo you like, and modify it. In fact, you could probably use photos from Flickr; make sure to check their license, and if you make it publically available make sure to cite the original photographer. So even us, whose artistic photos are best described as “pretentious” can have lovely background images.
